How we plan it

Layered light, in the right places

We plan around how you use the room: where you sit, read, watch TV and need power, then layer the light so it works morning and evening.

What goes on the plan

  • General light: a pendant or downlights, on a dimmer
  • Task light: reading lamps and lamp sockets where you sit
  • Accent light: wall lights, shelf strips, picture lights
  • Sockets, TV, data and charging points where furniture goes

What your electrician needs

  • Positions and heights for every point
  • Which lights switch together, and from where
  • New circuits flagged as notifiable work
  • A legend and notes they can price from

Notifiable electrical work should be done by an electrician registered with a competent person scheme. The rules on this page are for England.

FAQ

Straight answers

What does a lighting plan include?

A scaled plan of the room showing every light, switch, socket, TV and data point, with heights and which lights switch together. It comes with a legend and notes your electrician can quote and work from.

Why plan lighting in layers?

One ceiling light makes a room flat. A good plan mixes general light, task light for reading or working, and accent light such as wall lights or shelf strips, all on dimmers, so the room works for every time of day.

Do I need an electrician?

Yes. Our plan tells your electrician what to do; it doesn't replace them. In England, new circuits, a new consumer unit and work in bathrooms are notifiable, so use an electrician registered with a competent person scheme, who will certify the work.

Is adding sockets in a living room notifiable?

Adding sockets or lights to an existing circuit in a living room usually isn't notifiable in England, but it must still meet the wiring regulations. Your electrician will confirm what's needed for your house.

Can you plan other rooms?

Yes. We draw lighting and electrical plans for kitchens, bedrooms, home offices and whole floors, and they come as part of every complete room design.
